The Philippine government is set to bring 22 power projects online next month, aiming to add 1,471 megawatts of committed new capacity amid the ongoing global oil crisis, the Department of Energy (DOE) said on Sunday.

In an online statement, the agency announced that the move is part of a broader plan by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to accelerate the completion of 200 power plants over the next three years, ensuring a stable and sufficient electricity supply for the country.

The incoming capacities will come from renewable energy sources, including 12 solar projects, six hydroelectric plants, two biomass facilities, and one wind project, as well as an integrated renewable energy storage system.

Currently, the DOE is monitoring 200 committed power projects nationwide, with 24 power generation plants already in commercial operation. Three solar power plants have already begun operations this month.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin stressed the need for urgency and discipline in executing the projects, citing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East as a factor that could affect global energy markets.

“At a time when the country must act with urgency and discipline to protect the integrity of the power system, the timely delivery of committed capacity is imperative," she said.

Garin further emphasized that their priority is to protect the integrity of the power system while ensuring reliable energy for every Filipino.
