Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro has formally requested Iran to designate the Philippines as a “non-hostile country” to ensure the safe passage of Philippine-flagged vessels and oil shipments amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In the report of DZRH's Karen Ow-Yong, the move aims to protect Filipino seafarers and secure the country’s energy supply as conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran disrupts key maritime routes.

Lazaro met with Iranian Ambassador Yousef Esmaeilzadeh, alongside Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and potential cooperation in the energy sector.

The talks follow earlier political consultations between the Philippines and Iran and come as global oil transport faces heightened risks.

Iran has expressed willingness to assist the Philippines based on formal requests coursed through diplomatic channels to expedite action.

Malacañang confirmed that the Department of Energy is finalizing details on the discussions, while Lazaro is set to hold a phone call with Iran’s foreign minister to secure commitments at the highest level.

The Philippines is already feeling the impact of the crisis, with rising fuel prices and disrupted shipments as tensions affect the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. Recent attacks and counterattacks in the region have caused delays in crude deliveries, heightening concerns over energy security and economic stability.
