The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) has issued a warning regarding the spread of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Southeast Asia, according to the news report of Val Gonzales of DZRH.
Although the Philippines remains PPR-free, DA-BAI emphasized the need for stronger precautions as cases have already been reported within the region. PPR is a highly contagious disease that affects goats and sheep, causing fever, paleness, nasal discharge, mouth lesions, pneumonia, severe diarrhea, and high mortality.
DA-BAI clarified that the disease does not infect humans, but it poses a major threat to the livelihood of goat and sheep raisers.
The agency reminded the public to be cautious when purchasing animals or related products from countries with confirmed cases.
DA-BAI also urged livestock raisers to strengthen biosecurity measures on their farms. Any goat or sheep showing symptoms such as fever, mouth sores, constant tearing, difficulty breathing, or sudden death should be immediately reported to the nearest municipal or provincial veterinary office or municipal agricultural office.
