In the northern reaches of Palawan Island, the sand doesn’t just crunch underfoot; it behaves like "silky butter."

That sensory detail is part of why El Nido was recently named the third-best beach escape in the world by the BBC. The recognition highlights a growing global appetite for destinations that prioritize raw, geological drama over manicured resort strips.

The primary draw is Bacuit Bay, a marine sanctuary defined by jagged karst limestone cliffs that tower over neon-blue lagoons.

Unlike traditional beach destinations where visitors stay anchored to a single stretch of sand, the El Nido experience is inherently mobile.

Travelers navigate the archipelago using three primary vessels: speedboats for those looking to beat the midday crowds, catamarans offering a more stable and luxury-oriented cruise, or traditional Filipino bangkas. These wooden outrigger boats remain the most authentic and widely used method for local guides to traverse the bay.

Island-hopping tours typically culminate in solitary beach coves. Local crews often prepare traditional Filipino meals on-site, featuring grilled meats and fresh seafood served under the shade of limestone overhangs.

Beyond the water, the mainland has developed its own distinct coastal identity. While the lagoons offer adventure, the mainland beaches provide the "après-sea" culture.

Las Cabanas is known for its zip line and unobstructed sunset views, while Lio Beach is an eco-tourism estate focused on sustainability and boutique dining. Corong Corong remains a sunset hub where the sky regularly fades into deep red and gold.

El Nido’s third-place ranking puts it in elite company. The BBC’s curated list reflects a shift in travel trends toward "archipelago hopping," where the value of a trip is measured by how many hidden corners a traveler can discover in a single day.

“After a long day at sea, you can explore other white sand beaches on the mainland like Las Cabanas, Lio or Corong Corong. There's nothing like cracking open a cold bottle of San Miguel and watching the deep red and golden skies as the sun sets,” Francis Agustin said in BBC’s feature.
