The Philippines claimed its first-ever SEA Games women’s football gold after the Filipinas edged defending champion Vietnam, 6–5, in a sudden-death penalty shootout following a tense 120-minute final, ending decades of regional dominance by Vietnam and Thailand.

The historic triumph unfolded in a tense championship match that tested the Filipinas’ resolve from the opening whistle to the final kick.

For the second straight game, the Filipinas were pushed beyond regulation, forced to endure another grueling 30 minutes of extra time as neither side could break the deadlock despite sustained pressure and fleeting chances at both ends.

Vietnam, chasing a fifth consecutive SEA Games title, pressed with urgency, but the Philippine defense held firm, matching the hosts’ intensity and refusing to yield.

The Filipinas, meanwhile, showed growing confidence as the match wore on, absorbing pressure and responding with timely counters that kept the contest balanced until the final whistle of extra time.

With the gold medal on the line, the final was decided from the penalty spot. Both teams converted with precision, the tension mounting with every successful kick.

When the shootout reached sudden death, the Filipinas displayed remarkable composure, edging Vietnam 6–5 to seal a victory that sent the Philippine bench and supporters into celebration.

The win carries significance far beyond the scoreline. It shattered a 40-year duopoly in SEA Games women’s football dominated by Vietnam and Thailand, signaling a shift in the regional balance of power and announcing the Philippines as a new force in the sport.
