The Philippines and Timor-Leste have officially convened their first-ever bilateral energy meeting to explore expansive cooperation in the power and resources sector.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of this year’s Special Senior Officials' Meeting on Energy (SOME). This diplomatic milestone follows Timor-Leste’s formal step toward full membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), signaling a new era of regional integration for the young nation.
Led by Philippine Energy Undersecretary Felix William “Wimpy” B. Fuentebella, the discussions focused on diversifying and securing energy sources for both nations. The bilateral talks highlighted several high-priority sectors:
-
Power and Electricity: Exploring infrastructure development and grid stability.
-
Conventional Energy: Joint opportunities in oil and gas exploration.
-
Renewable Energy: Tapping into sustainable alternatives, specifically biomass.
Beyond resource sharing, both nations pledged to invest in comprehensive knowledge exchange programs, which include academic partnerships, professional training, and technical assistance.
Authorities mark the significant partnership as a strategic move for the Philippines to bolster its energy security while supporting Timor-Leste’s integration into the ASEAN energy framework.
