Philippine street food favorites took home the Judge’s Award at the 2026 YMCA Embassy Chef Showcase, as a featured curated selection of Filipino favorites impressed the judges by not just replicating the street food scene, but also recreating the culinary day-to-day experience of ordinary Filipinos.
According to the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, Filipino Chef David Vinoya, together with Chef Jan Michael Co, represented the Philippine mission in Canada.
Filipino selections, such as beef tapa barbecue, chicken inasal barbecue, longanisa barbecue, pork barbecue and achara or pickled papaya, collectively called “D’ Original Mang David’s BBQ,” were presented during the competition, as guests enjoyed the authentic street food experience while dipping the barbecue skewers into classic Filipino sauces.
The YMCA Embassy Chef Showcase was held last 16 April 2026 at the Horticulture Building in Lansdowne Park, Ottawa, and brought together 15 countries, including the Philippines, and representing their mission in the capital of Canada.
“The event celebrated cultural diversity through cuisine while supporting charitable causes, highlighting the shared commitment of the diplomatic community to foster goodwill and give back to the broader community,” the Philippine Embassy in Canada said.
“The distinguished panel of judges, chaired by Margaret Dickenson, a world-renowned Canadian cookbook author, columnist, and television host, recognized the Philippine entry for its excellence in execution, presentation, taste, and creativity,” the Embassy added.
The Philippine booth also emerged as one of the well-received highlights of the evening, featuring an elevated presentation of Filipino street food, blending tradition with modern aesthetics featuring Filipino everyday spices.

The experience was further enriched by “Love the Philippines” tourism campaign visuals, including posters and video presentations that showcased the country’s cultural and culinary heritage, the Embassy mentioned.
“We did not only want Ottawa to get a taste of Philippine street food. We wanted to let Ottawa experience how Filipinos end their work days, whether waiting in Cubao for their buses or jeepneys, or going home to their barangays, by eating comfort food at grill stations very much like D’ Original Mang David’s BBQ,” Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose Victor V. Chan-Gonzaga enthused.

According to the the Embassy, it’s participation underscores its continuing efforts to promote Philippine culture and gastronomy on the international stage, while supporting initiatives that foster cultural exchange and community engagement.
“The event provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the Philippines’ culinary traditions while contributing to a meaningful cause, as the Embassy celebrates Filipino Food Month and Filipino Restaurant Month in Canada this April,” the Embassy said.
