The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reiterated the country’s compliance with the ‘One China Policy’ in accordance with the 1975 Joint Communiqué between the Philippines and China.

In a statement dated Sunday, Sept. 20, the DFA said it does not prohibit the continuation of the Philippines’ economic, cultural, and functional cooperation with Tawain

“The One China Policy does not preclude the Philippines from pursuing economic, cultural and functional cooperation with Taiwan,” the DFA said.

The DFA also emphasized that it is the primary institution overseeing the country's foreign relations, in accordance with the Constitution and the Administrative Code.

“The Department remains the authoritative voice in the conduct of the country’s foreign policy. This role is grounded in law.”

The agency further stated that it will continue to pursue diplomacy, open communication, and the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, while safeguarding the welfare of Filipinos on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
