King James Reyes won bronze in the men’s 1,500-meter T46 final at the 5th Asian Para Games on Friday, giving the Philippines its first medal in the para athletics event in Nagoya, Japan.
The 24-year-old runner clocked a personal-best 4 minutes, 13.81 seconds at Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium to secure a podium finish.
Sri Lanka’s Wahumpurage Puwakpitikande claimed gold, finishing nearly 11 seconds ahead of Reyes, while India’s Parmod took silver, about five seconds faster than the Filipino.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) praised Reyes for his performance, highlighting his new personal record in a highly competitive field.
Reyes’ bronze came a day after fellow Filipino para athlete Cyril Cloyd Ongcoy lost his bronze medal in the same distance after his result in the T12/T13 classification was rescinded Thursday.
As of Friday morning, the Philippines had won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, placing 16th in the official medal tally.
