The Philippine National Men’s Football Team’s breakthrough campaign came to a stop after absorbing a 2-0 defeat to Vietnam in the semifinals on Monday afternoon at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Filipinos, powered by a youthful lineup, showed flashes of threat and held their own for long stretches of the match. They nearly found an opening after the hour mark when they were awarded a free kick near the edge of the box, but Sandro Reyes’ effort drifted high, keeping Vietnam firmly in control.
Vietnam made the most of its chances and leaned on its experience to book a place in the final, leaving the Philippines to regroup after falling just short of a title shot.
Still, the journey is not over. The Philippines remains in contention for a podium finish and will take on the loser of the other semifinal between Thailand and Malaysia in the battle for the bronze medal.
Head coach Garrath McPherson acknowledged the sting of the loss but praised his players’ heart and determination.
“This hurts because this means everything — to the players and to the country. You could see the emotion — they gave every last ounce of energy, mentally and physically,” McPherson said.
“This group has strong character. We’ll reflect on how close we came, but we don’t stop here. Tomorrow, we wake up and march forward, one foot in front of the other, towards the bronze medal match,” the coach added, reflecting on the team’s grit, resilience, and determination to bounce back despite the semifinal heartbreak.
