The Philippines secured its first gold medal at the 6th Asian Beach Games after Alexandria Luz Enriquez delivered a commanding performance in women’s jiu-jitsu on the opening day of competition here.
Enriquez overpowered South Korea’s Yeonji Lee with a decisive 5-0 victory, marking a historic breakthrough for Team Pilipinas in the beach sports meet.
The gold came after fellow Filipina jiu-jitsu athlete Jenna Kaila Napolis earlier secured the country’s first medal of the tournament, taking bronze in the women’s -52kg division. Napolis defeated Kazakhstan’s Zhibek Kulumbetova via advantage in a tightly contested bout.
A seasoned international medalist with bronze finishes in both the Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games, Napolis once again proved her consistency on the regional stage.
With one gold and one bronze, the Philippines currently sits third in the medal standings as of writing. China leads the tally with two golds, one silver, and one bronze, while the United Arab Emirates follows in second with two golds, one silver, and one bronze.
Team Philippines made an early statement on the first day of the competition, with its women’s jiu-jitsu athletes spearheading the country’s strong start in Sanya. The momentum adds to expectations ahead of the Philippines’ hosting of the next Asian Beach Games in Cebu in 2028.
The early success sets an encouraging tone for the rest of the Philippine campaign as athletes continue their bid for more medals in the coming days.
