The University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) has formed a group of specialists who will conduct medical examinations and diagnostic tests on former House Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez following a Sandiganbayan order for an independent medical evaluation.

In a statement Saturday, Sept. 12, the UP-PGH said the team will prepare a comprehensive medical report to be submitted to the Sandiganbayan on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 13.

“Bumuo ang PGH ng pangkat ng mga espesyalista na magsasagawa ng mga kinakailangang medical examinations at diagnostic tests,” the UP-PGH said.

Maghahanda sila ng komprehensibong ulat medikal na isusumite sa Sandiganbayan sa Linggo ng hapon. Ito ang magiging batayan ng rekomendason ng PGH kung kinakallangan ang patuloy na pananatili ni Congressman Romualdez sa ospital,” it added.

Romualdez was transferred from the Cardinal Santos Medical Center to PGH at around 8:45 a.m. Saturday to undergo an independent and thorough medical examination pursuant to the court order.

The transfer was accompanied by medical officers from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and was completed safely and smoothly, according to authorities.

PGH said the medical examinations and diagnostic tests were still ongoing as of 2 p.m. Saturday.

The hospital assured that the evaluation would be conducted "objectively and professionally," in accordance with the highest standards of medical practice.

“Mananatiling obhetibo at propesyonal ang PGH sa pagsasagawa ng pagsusuri, alinsunod sa pinakamataas na pamantayan sa larangan ng medisina,” the hospital said.

PGH also stressed that it would protect the confidentiality of Romualdez’s medical information. Details about his condition and test results will only be disclosed to the Sandiganbayan or the appropriate court.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division earlier ordered Romualdez to undergo an independent medical examination amid his reported health conditions, including hypertension and diabetes.

Romualdez, who remains in hospital confinement, is facing a plunder case in connection with an alleged kickback scheme involving government infrastructure projects.
