The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) expressed sadness over a truck crash in Baguio City that claimed the lives of two people and four cows.
In a statement, PETA extended sympathies to the families of the victims and to the animals involved, emphasizing that cows are gentle, intelligent, and social creatures that form strong bonds and experience fear and pain, much like dogs and cats.
“This heartbreaking crash is a stark reminder that animals transported for slaughter endure immense stress, fear, and suffering long before they ever reach the slaughterhouse,” PETA said.
The group also raised concern over reports that the only surviving cow from the accident was sent straight to slaughter.
“After surviving such a traumatic ordeal, the animal should have received immediate veterinary care and compassion. If recovery was not possible, the cow should have been humanely euthanized—or, ideally, transferred to a sanctuary where it could live out the rest of its life in peace and safety,” the statement added.
PETA encouraged the public to honor the lives of the cows by choosing vegan meals, helping prevent the suffering of other animals.
