Beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Walang Gutom Program (WGP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, can now avail of rice at only ₱20 per kilo beginning Monday, July 7.
The DSWD launched the initiative, held in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, at a basketball court in Barangay 69, Tondo, Manila. DSWD Secretary Rexlon “Rex” Gatchalian joined over 100 beneficiaries for the event.
“Ito ay malaking tulong para mas mapalawak ang kakayahan nilang (beneficiaries) makabili ng masustansya at sapat na pagkain para sa buong pamilya,” said Welfare Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Irene Dumlao in a statement.
(This is a great help in extending beneficiaries’ capabilities in purchasing nutritious and sufficient food for the whole family.)
The ₱20/kilo rice is now accessible at accredited retailers and KADIWA ng Pangulo kiosks. WGP beneficiaries—solo parents, persons with disability (PWD), and senior citizens—will be able to avail themselves of the low-cost rice using their electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards.
The WGP, which is the current administration’s flagship anti-hunger program, aims to reach up to 750,000 food-poor families before President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s term concludes. At present, it aids 300,000 households, the equivalent of 1.5 million individuals.
