The Photojournalists’ Center of the Philippines (PCP) expressed serious concern over remarks made by Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who allegedly referred to members of the media as “bayaran” or paid hacks during a Senate hearing on the alleged flood control scandal.

In a statement, PCP said the senator’s comments constitute sweeping and unsubstantiated accusations that undermine public trust in journalism and may expose media workers to harassment, intimidation, and threats.

The organization stressed that while criticism of the press is part of democratic discourse, such criticism must be based on facts and supported by evidence.

“Public officials who make serious allegations against journalists have a responsibility to present evidence, not rely on broad and inflammatory claims that malign an entire profession,” PCP said.

PCP also challenged Marcoleta to substantiate his allegations and identify specific journalists he believes have violated ethical standards. It added that if evidence exists, it should be presented before proper authorities to allow due process to proceed.

The group emphasized that elected officials should help ensure a safe and independent environment for journalists, particularly at a time when the country faces multiple national challenges.

“Public office must be used to uphold democratic freedoms and accountability, not to cast suspicion on the very institutions tasked with informing the public and scrutinizing those in power,” PCP said.

The statement comes amid growing concern from media organizations over remarks perceived as attacks on press credibility during recent Senate proceedings.
