The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued 58 people, including two infants, after a roll-on/roll-off passenger vessel tilted on its right side near Real Port in Barangay Ungos, Real, Quezon, early Friday.
The MV Virgen de Peñafrancia II tilted at around 12:44 a.m. on Oct. 30, about 10 meters from the port, the PCG said. The rescue operation concluded at around 3:30 a.m.
All 40 passengers and 18 crew members were safely evacuated and later assessed by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Real, which confirmed that all 58 individuals were in good physical condition.
The vessel, operated by Starhorse Shipping Lines Inc., was traveling from Polillo Port to Real Port with 14 rolling cargoes when the incident occurred.
The PCG has deployed oil spill booms to help prevent possible marine pollution in nearby coastal areas. Coast Guard personnel are also inspecting the vessel's remaining fuel and oil inventory after the crew reported that it had 1,300 liters of marine diesel oil in its service tank.
PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the shipping company had been directed to secure an Emergency Salvage Permit and take measures to safely remove the vessel.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and assess its potential environmental impact.
Cayabyab also said the incident would not affect sea passengers in Southern Tagalog.
The Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog recorded 4,107 outbound and 4,373 inbound passengers from midnight to 6 a.m. Friday, the highest passenger volume among PCG districts nationwide, amid preparations for the observance of Undas.
The PCG said it would continue to intensify vessel safety inspections to protect passengers during the holiday period.
