

Dewatering operations aboard MV June Aster remain ongoing, with 58 drums of an oil and water mixture recovered from the vessel’s flooded engine room, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a Legal Assistance Help Desk was established by the PCG at the Emergency Operations Center in Coron, Palawan.
At present, 24 families affected by the incident have been provided with legal assistance by the Coast Guard.
In addition, the agency has conducted an aerial survey from the northeast of Barangay Turda in Coron towards the southwest of Occidental Mindoro as part of search efforts.
On Monday, the missing captain of MV June Aster—which caught fire on the evening of September 9, killing 76 people—showed up at shipping company Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc.’s Palawan office.
The PCG said they intend to gather more information regarding the blaze and his whereabouts since the incident.
Including the captain, there are now 44 survivors, 76 dead, and 12 still missing among the 132 people aboard.
