The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that nearly 5.2 million outbound and inbound passengers have been monitored as of Friday, January 2, under the ongoing “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Pasko 2025,” which is set to conclude on January 4.
“Last year, we only catered 5 million [passengers]. We [are] anticipating na aabot sa 6 million,” said Capt. Noemie Gurao-Cayabyab in an interview on dzRH's Public Service Hour.
According to the PCG situation report covering the period from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon today, 64,408 outbound passengers and 52,243 inbound passengers were accounted for across inspected vessels and motorbancas.
A total of 395 vessels and 887 motorbancas were inspected to ensure passenger safety and compliance with maritime regulations.
Authorities cited weather considerations as a key factor in monitoring operations, particularly following gale warnings issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) for the northern seaboards. The public is reminded to check weather conditions in their respective areas before setting sail.
As of writing, no cancellations or suspensions of trips have been reported at any ports, though Cayabyab urged operators of small boats to exercise caution while navigating.
The peak passenger traffic was recorded on December 28, as travelers returned home after the Christmas holidays. Passenger numbers are expected to rise again on Sunday, January 3, according to current monitoring data.
Regarding maritime incidents, Cayabyab noted that engine failures or motorbanca breakdowns were the most common, with 14 incidents recorded, resulting in the rescue of 52 passengers.
Travelers are also advised not to bring prohibited items, as these can cause delays or complications during their journeys.
