The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) held a simultaneous donning of ranks and oath-taking ceremony for 20 newly promoted flag-rank officers at its National Headquarters in Port Area, Manila, on April 16, signaling a major step in bolstering its leadership corps.
The promotions—approved by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.—include two rear admirals and 18 commodores, aligning with the administration’s push to strengthen operational command and enhance the country’s maritime security capabilities.
In a message, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Giovanni Lopez commended the officers for their professionalism and dedication, noting that their service has contributed to elevating both institutional credibility and public trust.
Meanwhile, PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil L. Gavan emphasized that promotion to flag rank comes with greater accountability and ethical responsibility. He stressed that the advancement reflects not just authority, but a renewed commitment to the teams and principles that drive the organization.
Promoted to Rear Admiral were John Esplana and Marco Antonio Gines, while the 18 newly promoted Commodores will assume key leadership roles across operations, logistics, maritime law enforcement, and support services nationwide.
The donning of ranks remains a time-honored Coast Guard tradition, symbolizing both the trust of the command and the officers’ transition to higher responsibilities in safeguarding Philippine waters.
