The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday expressed full support for any move by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to honor Philippine Navy personnel wounded in the latest harassment incident involving the China Coast Guard at Ayungin Shoal.

Speaking at a press conference at the PCG West Philippine Sea Transparency Group Office in San Miguel, Manila, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Adm. Jay Tarriela, said the agency recognizes the professionalism and bravery of the affected Navy personnel.

Tarriela said the PCG stands in solidarity with the wounded servicemen, citing their dedication in carrying out their mission despite the risks posed by repeated confrontations in the disputed waters.

“Kung ako lang gusto ko silang parangalan, but these are AFP personnel,” Tarriela said, noting that the decision ultimately rests with the AFP leadership, which has jurisdiction over the Philippine Navy.

He added that the situation is comparable to a previous incident in 2024, when a Navy personnel who lost a finger during a confrontation with Chinese forces was later given recognition.

“On our level hindi sila part ng organization namin but we salute their professionalism and heroism in maintaining our presence in Ayungin Shoal,” Tarriela said.

The PCG has repeatedly condemned what it describes as aggressive and dangerous actions by Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea, particularly near Ayungin Shoal, where Philippine forces maintain a longstanding presence.
