The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responded to the statements made by Cavite 4th District Representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga, calling them unfair to the agency.

“The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) respects the right of elected officials to express their views on national matters,” the statement said on Wednesday, “However, recent remarks made by Congressman Francisco “Kiko” Austria Barzaga Jr. are unfair to the dedicated men and women of the PCG.”

This comes after the congressman made several statements criticizing the PCG and its personnel, including calling for its ‘abolition’ and describing it as a ‘waste of government funds.

PCG Spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said that the PCG is a professional, disciplined, and accountable government agency that operates transparently under civilian oversight. She added that the agency welcomes public scrutiny and will investigate any credible allegations of misconduct in accordance with due process.

Cayabyab also said that the PCG is open to dialogue with Barzaga and other lawmakers to clarify any misinformation and strengthen cooperation for maritime safety and security.

The PCG also clarified that the Philippine Coast Guard and the PCG Auxiliary (PCGA) are separate entities, whereas the PCGA is composed of civilian volunteers who assist in humanitarian activities and are not part of the Coast Guard’s active service.

Cayabyab added that PCGA members hold honorary ranks but do not have any authority or receive compensation.

The captain said that the PCG remains committed to carrying out its duties with integrity and courage, focusing on protecting lives and enforcing the law at sea.

Moreover, it was previously reported that Barzaga was officially removed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) after being found guilty of committing a grave offense, including actions that could jeopardize the AFP’s status as a non-partisan organization.
