The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has implemented a strict zero-tolerance policy against indiscriminate celebratory gunfire by its personnel during the 2026 New Year celebrations as reported by RH Boy Gonzales.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan emphasized that firing firearms is strictly prohibited except when related to official duties. Any personnel found violating the policy will be held accountable under existing laws and regulations.
The directive aligns with the instructions of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, aimed at ensuring public safety and preventing injuries or fatalities from stray bullets.
PCG Spokesperson Capt. Noemi Cayabyab stated that those proven to violate the policy may face both administrative and criminal penalties.
These include dismissal from service, forfeiture of benefits, lifetime disqualification from holding any public position, and possible prosecution under Republic Act No. 11926, which penalizes intentional discharge of firearms.
The PCG also underscored the principle of command responsibility, where commanders may be held accountable for the actions of personnel who violate the policy.
Capt. Cayabyab further clarified that firearms are issued solely for official duties and legitimate self-defense, and are not to be used for celebratory purposes.
