President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has called for peace in regions affected by ongoing conflicts around the world, urging countries involved in wars to respect international law and return to negotiations.
In his address before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (PH time), Marcos said the Philippines stands with the international community in pushing for restraint and diplomatic solutions to end hostilities in several conflict areas.
The President stressed the need for urgent action to restore peace in regions including the Middle East, Ukraine, Sudan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yemen, and Myanmar, among others.
“These tragedies need to stop. Innocents must be protected and their basic needs immediately provided,” Marcos said.
He added that the Philippines joins other nations in calling for restraint, de-escalation, and the cessation of hostilities in conflict-affected areas.
Marcos also highlighted the role of the Philippines within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), noting that as ASEAN Chair, the country led the issuance of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Statement on the situation in the Middle East.
The statement reaffirmed the obligation of all states to resolve differences through dialogue and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure during armed conflicts in accordance with international law.
The President also underscored the urgent need to address the humanitarian crises resulting from armed conflicts worldwide.
“As we call for the end of conflict around the world, we also urge all parties to these conflicts and the international community to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation arising from such conflicts,” Marcos said.
He emphasized that the safe, free, and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to people in need must remain a priority for the global community.
