President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. challenged Senator Imee Marcos to be more careful with her sources of information following her claims suggesting discussions on a possible term extension and a “no election” scenario in 2028.

The president firmly denied that such matters were ever discussed within his administration, stressing that the allegations have no basis and did not arise from any official or informal government conversation.

Speaking during a Kapihan with the Media in Tokyo, Japan, on May 29, as part of his state visit, Marcos also reacted to a video presentation made by the senator, saying misinformation can damage both individuals and institutions.

“I don’t know. I mean… She should fire her staff who gave her that information. Because, you know, fake news hurts everyone—not only those that fake news is attacking but also those that are purveying that fake news,” the President said.

He added that public officials should ensure the credibility of their information sources to avoid spreading inaccurate claims.

“She should choose her sources of information better. Because the truth of the matter is we have never at any point even spoken about this anywhere with anyone at any time,” Marcos stressed.

The president further described misinformation as a “corrosive influence” on society, affecting politics, the economy, and even personal relationships.

“Fake news is a corrosive influence on all sectors of society… and if you’re not part of the solution, you become part of the problem,” he said.

Marcos also emphasized that no discussions have taken place within the administration regarding extending terms or suspending elections, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.

The statement comes amid ongoing political tension within the Senate, where differing claims and accusations have recently surfaced regarding governance issues and political alignments.
