President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that selected offices under the executive branch will implement a temporary four-day workweek starting March 9 as part of government efforts to reduce energy consumption amid rising global oil prices.

In a video statement posted on his official Facebook page, Marcos said the measure is one of several steps the government is taking in response to the effects of the conflict in the Middle East on global fuel supply and prices.

“Simula sa Lunes, ikasiyam ng Marso, pansamantala nating ipapatupad ang four-day work week sa ilang tanggapan ng ehekutibo,” the President said.

However, he clarified that the policy will not apply to agencies providing essential and emergency services, including police, firefighters, and offices delivering frontline public services.

The president explained that the move is intended to help conserve electricity and fuel within government operations while the country faces potential spikes in energy costs. “Inaatasan ko ang lahat ng ahensya ng ating pamahalaan na magtipid at magbawas ng 10 hanggang 20 porsiyento sa konsumo ng kuryente at gastos sa petrolyo,” Marcos said.

Analysts note that a four-day workweek in government offices can significantly reduce operational costs, including electricity, transportation, and fuel usage, especially during periods of high energy prices.

The temporary arrangement forms part of broader government efforts to manage the economic impact of global energy disruptions while maintaining essential public services.
