President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso on Friday, October 17, in Malacañang to discuss major urban renewal and legacy infrastructure projects aimed at advancing sustainable development in the nation’s capital.
The meeting focused on the alignment of local and national infrastructure priorities as part of Manila’s long-term vision for modernization and inclusive growth.
Among the projects discussed was the proposed Intramuros Forest Park, a landmark environmental initiative intended to expand green spaces in the historic district. Mayor Domagoso also presented other programs under Manila’s 10-year Comprehensive Development Plan, previously endorsed by the City Development Council.
These include the restoration of Plaza Calderon, rehabilitation of the Lawton Underpass, and construction of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) College of Health and Sciences.
The city’s key housing projects were likewise highlighted, such as the completion of Binondominium 2 and 3, the construction of four in-city vertical housing towers within the Bureau of Plant Industry compound, and the “Land for the Landless” program covering four proposed sites across Manila.
To help ease traffic congestion, the city government also plans to develop parking facilities beneath the Skyway and NLEX Connector viaducts. In addition, as part of its cultural revitalization efforts, it intends to take over the operation and maintenance of the Metropolitan Theater.
Mayor Domagoso expressed optimism that these initiatives could be completed within the current administration, citing the success of his previous term as proof of Manila’s capability to deliver transformative projects.
During his first term as mayor, Domagoso’s administration implemented several major infrastructure and housing initiatives, including Tondominium 1 and 2, Binondominium 1, Basecommunity, San Sebastian Residences, Pedro Gil Residences, and San Lazaro Residences.
He also oversaw the construction of the new Ospital ng Maynila, the modernization of the Manila Zoo, and the development of modern public schools, including Manila Science High School, Dr. Albert Elementary School, and Rosauro Almario Elementary School.
The President commended the city’s continuing efforts toward inclusive urban growth, emphasizing the national government’s commitment to support local projects that promote sustainability, livability, and heritage preservation.
