President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos extended heartfelt congratulations to gymnast Carlos Yulo after his remarkable achievement at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Yulo clinched the Philippines' first-ever gold medal in artistic gymnastics.
Yulo’s triumph in the floor exercise marks a significant milestone for the country, following weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz's gold medal win in Tokyo three years ago.
In a Facebook post, President Marcos expressed national pride in Yulo’s accomplishment.
"Congratulations, Caloy! The entire country stands proud with you," the President wrote.
The President also conveyed his optimism for the nation’s continued success in the Games, stating, "We’ve witnessed history as Carlos Yulo clinched the Philippines’ first gold medal in artistic gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics. I am confident that it will not be the last."
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos also took to social media to celebrate Yulo's victory.
"Congratulations Carlos Yulo [clapping hands emoji]. You gave us the first GOLD MEDAL at the Paris Olympics 2024! Woo hoo!! Got goosebumps as Lupang Hinirang played at the arena! We are so proud of you!," she shared on Facebook.
Yulo’s victory is set to be richly rewarded. As the gold medalist, he will receive substantial incentives, including PHP 10 million from the government, PHP 3 million from the House of Representatives, an Olympic Gold Medal of Valor from the Philippine Sports Commission, and a house and lot from the Philippine Olympic Committee.
Looking ahead, Yulo will compete in the vault finals on Sunday (Manila Time), offering him another opportunity to add to his medal count.
Meanwhile, other Filipino athletes remain in the hunt for medals. Boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio are still vying for podium finishes, while pole vaulter EJ Obiena has qualified for the men’s pole vault finals.
Hurdlers John Cabang Tolentino and Lauren Hoffman, golfers Dottie Ardina and Bianca Pagdanganan, and weightlifters John Ceniza, Vanessa Sarno, and Elreen Ando are also preparing to commence their respective events, representing the Philippines with pride and determination.
