

It was a night of nostalgia and national pride as President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos joined boxing legend Manny Pacquiao in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the “Thrilla in Manila," held at the historic Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on Wednesday, October 29.
Thousands of boxing fans gathered to commemorate the golden anniversary of the iconic 1975 bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, a match that forever etched the Philippines in the global sports map.
The President and First Lady were joined by Jinkee Pacquiao and former senator Mar Roxas at the event, which featured an exhibition "Thrilla in Manila 2" fight between Nico Ali Walsh, grandson of the legendary Muhammad Ali, and Thai fighter Kittisak Klinson. The bout ended in a draw, but the crowd’s energy and Marcos’ enthusiastic ringside cheers brought the spirit of “Thrilla in Manila” roaring back to life.
In his online post, President Marcos looked back at the historic match and highlighted how it continues to symbolize Filipino excellence and global recognition.
“Fifty years ago, the world watched the Philippines host one of the greatest boxing matches in history,” Marcos said. “The Thrilla in Manila was a moment that cemented our country’s place in global sports. Tonight, we honor that legacy by celebrating a new generation of champions who continue to bring pride to our nation.”
The President also thanked Manny Pacquiao for leading the commemoration and for his unwavering contribution to Philippine sports.
“Congratulations to our People’s Champ, Manny Pacquiao, for keeping this milestone alive and inspiring every Filipino athlete to aim higher and fight harder. Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino!” the President added.
The Thrilla in Manila, held on October 1, 1975, remains one of the most celebrated boxing matches in history, a long fight yet unforgettable showdown that showcased not only the grit of Ali and Frazier but also the warmth and hospitality of the Filipino people.
