TNT Tropang 5G moved within striking distance of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals after overpowering the Meralco Bolts, 109-92, claiming a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven semifinal series game 2 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.
From the opening tip, TNT dictated the pace and never relinquished control, riding a balanced attack and relentless defense that kept Meralco at bay despite several attempts to mount a comeback.
Oftana anchored the Tropang 5G offense with a game-high 26 points to go along with seven rebounds, consistently punishing the Bolts from the perimeter and in transition.
Heading provided ample support with 24 points and two rebounds, giving TNT a steady scoring presence whenever Meralco threatened to close the gap.
Veteran contributions also came into play, with Pogoy and Williams chipping in 12 points apiece, while Ganuelas-Rosser added 11 markers as TNT’s depth continued to wear down the Bolts.
TNT set the tone early, racing to a 29-19 first-quarter lead and carrying that momentum into halftime with a 57-46 advantage.
Meralco tried to claw its way back behind Newsome and Hodge, who scored 18 points each, but TNT answered every run, stretching the margin to 82-66 heading into the final period before sealing the convincing victory.
With the win, TNT positioned itself for a commanding 3-0 series edge when the two teams collide in Game 3 on Friday, Jan. 9, at the same venue—a result that would place the Tropang 5G firmly on the doorstep of the Finals.
