The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) on Wednesday expressed grief over the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili following a fatal drowning incident during a team-building activity in Aurora province.
In a statement, the PBA said it was deeply saddened by the tragedy involving the two players from the Ateneo men’s basketball program.
“The PBA is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili,” the league said.
“We extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and the entire Ateneo community.”
The victims reportedly drowned during a team-building trip in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. Authorities have ruled out foul play, with the local police describing the incident as a “purely accidental” drowning.
The deaths have sent shockwaves through the local basketball community, with athletes, alumni, and public figures expressing condolences and paying tribute to the two young players.
Former Pinoy Big Brother housemate Lance Justin Carr, who studied at Ateneo de Davao University, shared an emotional message online, recalling his time on the court with Baterbonia.
“Blessed to have shared the court with you. The Ateneo de Davao community is incredibly proud of the legacy and glory you brought to our school and to the entire Davao Region,” Carr wrote.
“Your impact goes far beyond basketball, and your inspiration will live on in the hearts of many. Fly high, Mr. MVP,” he added.
OPM icon Gary Valenciano also expressed his condolences in a Facebook post, saying he was deeply affected by the news despite being an alumnus of De La Salle University.
“I may be a green archer from La Salle but my heart is crushed at the devastating news about the two players from ADMU that perished in a drowning incident yesterday,” Valenciano said. He added, “My prayers are sincerely with their families and the entire ADMU community. Psalm 34:18: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Meanwhile, former Ateneo de Manila University student-athlete Gretchen Ho also expressed grief and called for transparency following the deaths of two Ateneo basketball players.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to form a special task force to conduct a “thorough, comprehensive, and impartial” investigation into the drowning of Baterbonia and Adili.
