The local government of Pasig City has prohibited advertisements, including billboards, signage, and sponsorships, from gambling companies, Mayor Vico Sotto announced on Monday, December 8.

The measure will be enforced under Ordinance No. 26, Series of 2025, titled “Prohibiting the Promotion and Advertising of Gambling within the Jurisdiction of Pasig City.”

“May mga bagay na hindi na sakop ng kapangyarihan ng LGU, lalo na kung national o online ang pinag-uusapan, pero malaking hakbang na rin ang pagbabawal ng advertisement nito sa ating lungsod,” Mayor Sotto said.

Under the ordinance, all forms of promotion from gambling companies—including billboards, sponsorships, and other forms of advertisements—are no longer allowed in the city.

Mayor Sotto recalled Pasig’s efforts to curb gambling, where in 2022 they became the first local government unit in the country to ban both Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) and computer gambling shops, also known as ‘e-games,’ within their jurisdiction, the Ordinance 55 s. 2022.

"While we were passing the Ordinance (no. 55 s-2022), we received countless numbers of messages asking us to reconsider; at least 2 councilors told me they were offered money. But we stood firm," the Pasig Mayor stated.

“Ngayon, masaya ako dahil banned na rin ang POGO sa buong Pilipinas at meron pa ngang na-convict na dahil sa mga kaugnay nitong krimen,” he added.

Officials emphasized the social impact of gambling, citing "numerous cases of addiction and financial ruin caused by active-play gambling games."

Sotto further pointed out that while individuals may choose to engage in gambling voluntarily, constant exposure and encouragement from advertisements can lead residents back into harmful behaviors.

“Gambling psychology is a well-researched subject. I trust that no one will give us a hard time for passing this ordinance,” he added.
