Veteran penitential devotee Ruben Enaje will take part once more in the annual Good Friday crucifixion rites in Barangay San Pedro Cutud, marking what is expected to be his final year portraying “Kristo” after nearly four decades.
Enaje, 65, who announced plans to retire last year, reversed his decision and confirmed his participation in this year’s Maleldo, one of the country’s most prominent Holy Week traditions. He remains among the official “Kristo” figures for 2026, particularly in the Via Crucis reenactment.
The longtime devotee has been nailed to the cross for 36 years, earning recognition as the city’s principal “Kristo” and becoming one of the most enduring symbols of the Good Friday ritual in San Fernando.
Despite feeling nervous, Enaje said the support of devotees strengthens his resolve to fulfill his vow.
“Ang pagpasan ng krus na 'to ay para sa mga tao,” he said, expressing both anxiety and renewed faith as he prepares for what he described as his final crucifixion.
Devotees and spectators are expected to gather in large numbers this Good Friday to witness the reenactment in Barangay San Pedro Cutud, where Enaje has performed the ritual for decades.
Successor named
With Enaje set to retire after this year, fellow devotee Arnold Maniago has been named as his successor. Maniago, 47, has participated in the crucifixion rites for 25 years and is expected to continue the tradition in succeeding Maleldo observances.
According to Maniago, Enaje has encouraged him to carry on the vow for as long as he is able.
Authorities have also deployed medical personnel, police, and other responders in anticipation of large crowds and extreme heat during the event, ensuring safety measures are in place throughout the observance.
This year’s rite is widely seen as a historic moment, marking the final crucifixion of Enaje, whose decades-long devotion has become closely identified with the Maleldo tradition.
