Malacañang has highlighted Supreme Court Associate Justice Rodil Zalameda’s extensive experience in the legal and judicial sectors as a key consideration in his appointment as the 28th Chief Justice of the Philippines.
During a Palace briefing on Thursday, November 5, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Lino Cayetano said Zalameda has served in government under several presidential administrations, beginning with former President Fidel V. Ramos and continuing through the administrations of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno Aquino III, and Rodrigo Duterte, who appointed him to the Supreme Court.
Cayetano also cited Zalameda’s experience as a clerk of court, prosecutor, Court of Appeals justice, and Supreme Court associate justice.
“So his wide, broad experience makes him extremely qualified for the job,” Cayetano said when asked about the President’s considerations in selecting Zalameda to lead the country’s highest court.
The 63-year-old magistrate succeeds Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, who is set to reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 on November 6.
