DOST-PAGASA has decommissioned seven tropical cyclone names from the 2025 season due to the extent of damage it caused in the country.
On Thursday, March 19, the state weather bureau announced that the following names will be removed from its regular roster after meeting its criteria:
- Crising
- Emong
- Mirasol
- Nando
- Opong
- Tino
- Uwan
According to PAGASA, a domestic tropical cyclone name is decommissioned once its “occurrence results in either the deaths of at least 300 individuals or damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and other assets amounting to at least PHP 1 billion based on official reports from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).”
The OCD reported that the seven tropical cyclones resulted in 373 fatalities, 680 injuries, and 132 missing individuals, with their combined cost of damage amounting to over PHP 36 billion.
The following names will be used as replacements starting 2029:
- Chico
- Elias
- Magyawan
- Nilad
- Omar
- Tala
- Urbano
