The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, October 27, announced the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as Amihan, signaling the start of the cooler season in the country.

In a press release, PAGASA said observations over the past few days showed that the high-pressure area over East Asia was strengthening, resulting in a surge of northeasterly winds and lower air temperatures over Extreme Northern Luzon.

“These meteorological patterns indicate the start of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season,” the agency said.

PAGASA said Amihan is expected to become dominant over most parts of the country in the coming months, bringing cooler weather, occasional cold surges, and rough sea conditions.

The agency also warned that the shear line, tropical cyclones, and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) may influence the country's weather conditions throughout the season.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said it would continue monitoring the country's weather and climate conditions, particularly the ongoing El Niño, which is expected to become very strong before the end of the year.

The agency urged the public and concerned government agencies to regularly monitor official PAGASA updates for the latest weather information.
