The Philippine Air Force (PAF) on Thursday inaugurated its newly completed Basing Support System under the Pag-asa Island Project in Pag-asa Island, located in the Municipality of Kalayaan, Palawan.

In a report by RH Edniel Parrosa on DZRH's "Damdaming Bayan", the facility is expected to strengthen air operations and improve logistical support in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). The project marks the completion of key basing support infrastructure and facilities designed to enhance the PAF’s operational capability in the area.

The inauguration was led by PAF personnel together with Commanding General Lieutenant General Arthur M. Cordura, who served as the Guest of Honor.

The ceremony was conducted in close coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), MAMSAR Construction Corporation, and the Local Government Unit of Palawan.

According to Cordura, the improved facilities address previous operational limitations, allowing for more reliable and continuous mission support in the island outpost.

Aside from the basing support system, the runway on Pag-asa Island has also been completed, while additional infrastructure projects such as a Coast Guard District Facility are currently underway.

During his visit, Cordura also led the distribution of school supplies to students of Pag-asa Elementary School, highlighting the PAF’s continued community engagement alongside its defense mandate.

“This milestone highlights the PAF’s dedication to improving operational readiness and reinforcing its presence in strategically significant areas, as it remains steadfast in its mission to protect the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while contributing to regional stability and security,” the PAF said in a statement.

Pag-asa Island has remained a subject of national discussion, particularly during recent Senate debates, due to questions raised by critics regarding its position within the 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

However, Philippine authorities maintain that the island is under the effective occupation and administration of the Municipality of Kalayaan.
