Sen. Robinhood Padilla on Tuesday condemned what he described as the “violent and aggressive” actions of the China Coast Guard (CCG) against Filipino troops in Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a statement, Padilla denounced the reported assault on a Philippine Navy personnel who was allegedly struck with a wooden baton while carrying out his duties, calling it a “blatant affront” to Filipino soldiers and a dangerous escalation of tensions in waters under Philippine jurisdiction.

The senator questioned how long the Philippines would continue to exercise restraint amid repeated confrontations, saying efforts to avoid conflict have been met with continued harassment.

Padilla urged the government to take stronger and more concrete steps to protect Filipino personnel and uphold the country’s maritime rights. He also called for accountability for those responsible, saying repeated protests are not enough if such incidents persist.

"Hindi ako sang-ayon sa digmaan. Ngunit hindi rin ako sang-ayon na ang paghahangad natin ng kapayapaan ay abusuhin at ituring na kahinaan. Sumusobra na ang China Coast Guard," Padilla said.

He expressed support for Filipino troops, praising their discipline and professionalism despite what he described as intense provocation. Padilla said the personnel, though unarmed, stood their ground and defended themselves using available means.

While reiterating that he does not support war, Padilla said the country’s pursuit of peace should not be mistaken for weakness, adding that the Philippines must stand firm when its soldiers are harmed.
