In an exclusive interview on DZRH TV's Matchpoint, Owa Retamar shared a story that goes beyond volleyball—a journey shaped by ambition, sacrifice, and purpose.

For Retamar, playing abroad was more than an opportunity—it was essential for growth.

“Gusto ko rin matuto and gusto ko nga ma-experience yung na-experience nila Kuya Bry and Kuya Mark and gusto ko rin mas ma-try pa ng mas mataas na level pa,” he shared.

Competing in Cambodia exposed him to a higher level of play, where constant encounters with international athletes pushed him to adapt and improve.

Despite the pressure of being an import player, Retamar embraced it as motivation. He said, “Kung walang pressure parang hindi ka matututo eh. So kailangan mong maranasan yun para mag-improve ka.”

He also faced communication challenges as a setter. “Syempre po yung language barrier po napakahirap po…Lalo na kapag may mga kailangang baguhin tapos hindi ko alam kung paano ko sasabihin sa kanila.”

Returning to the Philippines, Retamar brings back not only improved skills but also a stronger sense of discipline and professionalism.

Amid challenges in the local volleyball scene, he remains hopeful—especially for the younger generation. “Nakakatuwa kasi marami talagang bata gustong mag-volleyball and nakikitaan ko sila na sana sa future okay na yung volleyball sa Pilipinas,” he shared.

Now taking on mentoring roles, Retamar continues to inspire—proving that his impact goes beyond the court.
