Members of the House Justice Committee are confident that the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte will secure strong support in the plenary on Monday, paving the way for the Senate to convene as an impeachment court.
According to a report by RH Milky Rigonan on “DZRH’s Damdaming Bayan,” Lanao del Sur Representative Zia Alonto Adiong, a member of the committee, estimated that the committee report could garner more than 200 votes when it is brought to the plenary for approval.
House Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno, who also chairs the National Unity Party (NUP), confirmed that around 60 percent of the party’s 55 members are expected to vote in favor of the impeachment of the Vice President.
Meanwhile, House Senior Deputy Majority Leader Lorenz Defensor said that the alleged threats to the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez remain the strongest evidence cited in the impeachment complaints against the Vice President.
The House Justice Committee released a 93-page report on Wednesday night and distributed copies to lawmakers for review ahead of the scheduled plenary vote on Monday.
In its recommendation, the committee found Vice President Duterte “guilty” of all allegations filed against her.
It also recommended her removal from office, perpetual disqualification from holding any public position, and the filing of appropriate criminal charges.
Under the Constitution, at least one-third of all House members, or 106 votes, is required for the articles of impeachment to be transmitted to the Senate, where an impeachment trial will proceed if the threshold is met.
