Over 195,000 Bicolanos were evacuated by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) amid the ongoing volcanic activity of Mayon Volcano in Albay on Tuesday, May 5.
According to PCG Spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, their efforts in assisting affected families are ongoing. She stressed that the PCG’s primary goal is to ensure the safety of locals who live near the foot of the volcano, reported RH 29 Boy Gonzales.
The PCG has also sent two water purification or desalination units to the towns of Guinobatan and Camalig in Albay, allowing the evacuees and affected residents access to up to 10,000 liters of clean, portable water.
The PCG is also helping with clearing operations to remove the ash that has accumulated on the streets for the residents' safer travel.
Earlier, state volcanologists from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared photos of the lava flow collapse-fed pyroclastic density current along Mi-isi gully on the southwestern slopes of Mayon Volcano.
The event occurred between 7:19 a.m. and 7:26 a.m., while Mt. Mayon remains under Alert Level 3, with entry into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone prohibited.
