More than 1,500 people have been affected and one person was reported dead due to flooding and rain-induced landslides triggered by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and easterlies, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
In its latest situation report, the NDRRMC said a total of 387 families, or more than 1,500 individuals, were affected by flooding and landslides in parts of Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental, even as the rainy season has yet to fully set in.
Of those affected, 347 families or 1,435 individuals are currently staying in 16 evacuation centers in Davao City after their homes were inundated by continuous rains brought by the weather systems.
The agency also reported one fatality, a 21-year-old male who was allegedly electrocuted during the flooding incident. The victim was later found floating in floodwaters in New San Isidro, Barangay Buhangin in the early hours of Monday.
However, the NDRRMC said the reported death is still subject to validation as authorities continue to verify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, local authorities reported that a bridge in Davao City became impassable around 6 a.m. due to rising floodwaters, disrupting early morning travel in the area.
