The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) conducted a high-level inspection of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Wednesday, as the agency reported the seizure of approximately 200 pieces of ammunition across various airports during the Holy Week travel rush.

OTS Administrator Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz led the inspection to ensure security measures are strictly implemented while thousands of travelers flock to terminals for the long holiday.

The initiative aims to prevent travel disruptions and guarantee passenger safety during the peak period. Following the assessment, Cruz stated that security protocols at NAIA remain stable despite the heavy volume of passengers.

As part of their public assistance efforts, the OTS distributed travel kits and informational flyers containing essential tips to commuters.

Data released by the agency revealed that approximately 200 rounds of live and blank ammunition have been intercepted nationwide during the Lenten season.

Over 100 of those rounds were confiscated at NAIA, while another 65 rounds of live ammunition were seized at Puerto Princesa Airport. In one specific incident, a female passenger was taken into police custody after authorities discovered live ammunition in her possession.

Authorities noted that security personnel continue to encounter passengers carrying ammunition as "amulets." Many travelers still carry empty casings or live rounds believing they serve as lucky charms, known locally as anting-anting.

In cases involving blanks or single pieces used as talismans, authorities generally allow the passengers to proceed with their flights after the items are surrendered to avoid unnecessary delays.

The OTS chief emphasized the need for a more aggressive information campaign to educate the public on airport prohibitions.

“Kailangan mag-increase talaga tayo ng info-drive kung ano yung mga bawal dito sa airport. And on a daily basis, mga 8 to 15 ang nahuhuli natin na mga bala.”

Cruz reported that security teams intercept between 8 to 15 bullets on a daily basis, suggesting that many travelers remain uninformed or careless regarding prohibited items.

“Makikita mo na marami pa rin ang hindi informed at hindi sila maingat.”

Following the NAIA inspection, the OTS scheduled further security audits at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), LRT-1 stations, and the Manila North Harbor Port to monitor the safety of land and sea travelers.
