Severe tropical storm Opong has continued to intensify as it moves closer to Romblon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

As of 8:00 a.m. Friday, the storm’s center was located over the coastal waters of Mandaon, Masbate. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center, with gusts reaching up to 150 kph, while moving west-northwestward at 30 kph.

PAGASA said Opong may make landfall or pass very near Romblon and Mindoro within the next 12 hours before emerging over the West Philippine Sea by Friday afternoon or evening. The typhoon is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday afternoon, September 27.

Heavy rainfall is expected across Southern Luzon. In Metro Manila, the peak of rains is likely between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. today, according to PAGASA weather forecaster Munir Baldomero.

"Ang CALABARZON po ang medyo makkaaranas ng mga malalakas na pag-ulan," he added.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals have been raised in several areas as the typhoon continues its approach.
