The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested the founder and chief executive officer of an online media network for alleged extortion of former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez.

The suspect, identified as Franco Mabanta, was apprehended in an entrapment operation conducted at Valle Verde Country Club. Marked money was recovered from Mabanta during the operation.

According to reports, Mabanta allegedly demanded ₱350 million in exchange for withholding the release of supposed videos linking Romualdez to a flood control scandal.

Romualdez reportedly refused to give in to the demand and instead reported the matter to authorities.

NBI confirmed the arrest, saying the operation was carried out after coordination with the complainant.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag told DZRH News that the suspect is set to undergo inquest proceedings.

Authorities said Mabanta is now facing charges of extortion as the investigation continues.

Matibag also announced that a media briefing would be held at 11:00 a.m. to provide further details on the case.
