The Office of the Ombudsman on Thursday said it will comply with a subpoena issued by the House of Representatives' Committee on Justice seeking copies of the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) of Vice President Sara Duterte.
During a press conference, Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano said the agency is prepared to hand over Duterte’s SALNs in its possession to support the committee’s ongoing impeachment review.
“Here in the Office of the Ombudsman, any person can request—the public, the general public can request—for a copy of the SALN of those that are in the possession of the Ombudsman…So even a simple request would do. And so much more if it is a subpoena, we will comply,” Clavaco said.
The House justice panel issued the subpoena as part of its proceedings to determine whether there is probable cause in the impeachment case against the vice president.
Lawmakers are requesting the release of certified true copies of Duterte’s SALNs covering multiple periods, including 2007 to 2013, 2016 to 2022, and 2022 to 2025.
According to Clavano, the office maintains a repository of SALNs that may be accessed by the public upon request.
The Assistant Ombudsman added that SALNs from Duterte’s earlier years in local government—when she served as mayor and vice mayor of Davao City—may also be retrieved through its regional offices.
He added that the requests for those documents will be endorsed to the appropriate repository, particularly the agency’s Mindanao office.
Officials assured that the process has been streamlined to allow faster release of documents. “We have streamlined the processes… so requests can be processed quickly,” the Ombudsman said.
Meanwhile, Ombudsman Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla emphasized that compliance with the subpoena is “part of the constitutional process and legal framework governing impeachment proceedings."
“It's part of the constitutional process that we have. It's the legal process. And we just abide by the rules and the law when it comes to impeachment proceedings. Susunod lang tayo sa batas,” Remulla said.
Under the Constitution, if the House of Representatives approves the articles of impeachment, the case will be transmitted to the Senate for trial.
A conviction could result in Duterte’s removal from office and permanent disqualification from holding public office.
