Davao City 2nd District Rep. Omar Duterte criticized the Senate impeachment court’s decision to lower the voting threshold for conviction in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, September 23, Omar described the move as unfair and argued that changing the threshold does not conform to the Constitution.

“Sobra na. Hindi na patas ang mga nangyayaring ito. Ang pagpilit na ibaba ang conviction threshold ay hindi kailanman magiging tama o naaayon sa Saligang Batas,” Omar said.

He accused those behind the move of what he called a deliberate abuse of the process for political interests.

“Ito ay isang desperado at lantaran nang pang-aabuso para sa kanilang malinaw na pansariling agenda sa pulitika,” he added.

Omar, the son of Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo Duterte and nephew of Vice President Sara Duterte, said he was concerned about what he described as an attack on the country’s Constitution and democratic institutions.

“Nasasaktan ako para sa ating bayan dahil niyuyurakan nila ang ating Konstitusyon at demokrasya para lamang sa sarili nilang interes. Hindi natin ito dapat hayaan,” he said.

He ended his post by calling for unity and urging the public to pray for the Philippines.

“Manatili tayong matatag at nagkakaisa. Ipagdasal natin ang Pilipinas. God Save the Philippines,” Omar said.
