Hey everyone, our cousin Olivia just cooked lumpia inside the Vogue Kitchen!
Filipino-American musician Olivia Rodrigo teased her upcoming album for British Vogue while cooking a dish that Filipinos would instantly recognize. The singer joined the magazine’s “Now Serving” video series, prepping Chicken Lumpia and a Paloma with a slight Pinoy accent.
The “bad idea right?” singer first prepared her go-to drink, a Paloma, traditionally made with tequila and grapefruit soda. Instead of making it the usual way, Olivia opted to add calamansi juice. She then proceeded to make the Lumpia with: ground chicken mixed with vegetables and herbs, sesame oil, and eggs.
According to Olivia, Lumpia is a “feel good” food, adding that she learnt the recipe through her grandmother, who makes triangle-shaped ones for their family every Thanksgiving. In the episode, however, the singer made the classic roll versions.
While preparing the ingredients, Olivia admitted that one word is not enough to describe her upcoming album, stating that it is “very varied.”
“I really wanted to figure out a way to kind of write about joy in this album. I feel like my last two albums are rightfully so, kind of angsty and heartbroken,” she said.
"Just as a creative endeavor, and also 'cause I was experiencing a lot of joy in my life…I wanted to figure out how to inject that into the songs I was making,” she added.
Besides joy, the “driver’s license” singer shared that she also wanted to write about love, one of the broadest topics.
“I think in music, my favorite love songs are songs that are a little bit sad or songs that have wistfulness or mourning or fear,” the singer reflected. “I kind of set out making this album trying to make a sad love song.”
On the Act of Writing
Delving deeper into her writing process, the musician admitted how much she loves the act of writing.
“I think, the more that you show up and show the universe that you’re ready to work, the better ideas you will receive,” she stated. “I write so many songs that don’t work. Countless…but it’s okay. Every time you write a song that doesn’t work, you take a little bit of that song. Like one line, or one melody and you put it into the song that does work.”
“Even when I write a bad song, I’m just like, ‘You know what, it’s the journey,” she continued.
After deep-frying the Lumpia, Olivia encouraged viewers to pair theirs with a Paloma.
The singer has been promoting the release of her third album in the last few weeks, with her fan account using the hashtags #OliviaIsComing and transforming the paint colors of a wall in Los Angeles from her signature shade of purple to pink, alongside her new logo.
Olivia visited the Philippines in 2024, offering P1,500 ticket prices for the “Guts” tour. Proceeds from her sold-out concert were then donated to global women’s charities.
