A number of military officers were sacked after a young, freshly-inducted recruit consequently died from a traditional reception rite in Maguindanao del Sur on July 31.

In a report by RH 52 Edniel Parrosa, 6th Infantry Division Spokesperson Lt. Col. Roden Orbon identified the victim as Private Charlie Patigayon, aged 22. The rite was performed at the military headquarters in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur, on July 30.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Notre Dame Hospital in Cotabato City. However, kidney failure, which may have resulted from his injuries, claimed his life the following day.

According to Philippine Army Spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala, the victim’s own company commander was among those relieved from their posts. However, Dema-ala did not give a specific number of officers, as the probe on all possibly involved is presently underway.

The Army spokesperson assured that those proven guilty and those complicit in their neglect will be held accountable before the military justice system and the law. Addressing the victim’s family, he said the army is dedicated to ensuring justice for Patigayon.

Republic Act No. 11053 prohibits harmful reception rites like hazing that leads to physical and psychological suffering. The law penalizes such acts causing death with reclusion perpetua or imprisonment and a fine of ₱3,000,000.
