A quick-thinking Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel helped save a child from a near-drowning incident at Eco Park in Agoo, La Union on May 2, 2026.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO) Aldrine Cordero was off duty when he noticed a commotion near the shoreline. Sensing something was wrong, he immediately coordinated with bystanders to call for emergency assistance, helping organize a swift response to the unfolding emergency.

Without hesitation, SCPO Cordero applied his training and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the unconscious child, a critical intervention that played a key role in reviving the victim.

When personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) arrived, the child was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Medical staff later confirmed that the patient regained consciousness and was stabilized.

Authorities credited the successful rescue to the coordinated response of responders and the decisive actions of the off-duty PCG personnel.

"The successful response highlights the PCG’s strong commitment to public safety and the readiness of its personnel to respond to emergencies at all times, even while off duty," the PCG said.
