The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Friday expressed concern over the impending closure of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), calling it a significant loss to Philippine journalism.

In a statement, the NUJP said CMFR’s closure would remove an institution that has served as a watchdog over the media while promoting accountability, press freedom and responsible journalism.

“The loss of a watchdog that watches over the watchdogs is a profound blow to Philippine Journalism, leaving a void in an industry that needs accountability,” the group said.

The NUJP said CMFR’s independent voice would be deeply missed as the press faces mounting pressures from various interests.

The statement came after CMFR announced earlier Friday that it would cease operations on Sept. 30 after 37 years, citing challenges in securing funding.
